Heartworm Disease In Dogs

April 23, 2019

Dogs contract heartworm disease from mosquito bites. When a mosquito bites an infected animal and then bites your dog, heartworm larvae are transferred. These larvae invade the heart and blood vessels in the lungs, where they develop into worms that can reach up to 12 inches in length.

Signs Of Heartworm In Dogs

Major symptoms of heartworm in dogs begin to show approximately 6 months after infection and can include:

  • Coughing or fainting after exercise
  • Weakness, lethargy, or avoidance of physical activity
  • Stopping eating, losing weight, or becoming anorexic
  • Difficulty breathing or breathing rapidly
  • A chest that appears to be bulging
  • Asthma or allergy-like symptoms

Year-Round Risk In Texas

Due to the year-round warmth and humidity in Texas, heartworm infection is a threat all year long. There is no "safe" season — consistent prevention is essential.

The American Heartworm Society recommends that all dogs be tested annually for heartworm infection, regardless of whether they are on prevention.
